At the Temiskaming Shores and Area Chamber of Commerce (TSACC), we know that the policies and economic conditions shaping Ontario’s business landscape today will determine its strength tomorrow. The OCC’s 2025 Ontario Economic Report provides a comprehensive look at business confidence, economic challenges, and future outlooks. One of the most pressing concerns this year? The looming threat of U.S. tariffs—a development that could shake confidence and disrupt industries across the province.

Tariffs: A Threat to Business Confidence
The OCC's data highlights a striking reality: tariff threats have already weakened business confidence. While Ontario’s economic outlook showed signs of modest improvement, confidence drops drastically when U.S. tariffs are on the table. A survey of business leaders found that:

• 60% of respondents are not confident in Ontario’s economy under potential tariff conditions.
• 67% believe tariffs will negatively impact their own business—with concerns centering on increased costs for raw materials and reduced sales.
• 41% anticipate revenue declines, while 40% expect rising input costs.

This uncertainty puts certain sectors at higher risk than others. Industries that were already struggling—like retail, accommodation and food services, agriculture, and manufacturing—are particularly vulnerable. If tariffs are imposed, these industries, already facing high costs and tight margins, will be hit the hardest.

A Silver Lining? Finding Opportunity in Challenge

While concerns are valid, there is also a potential upside: a shift toward supporting Canadian businesses, domestic suppliers, and new trade relationships. Historically, economic disruptions have led to innovation and adaptation. Some businesses are already preparing to:

• Diversify suppliers and reduce reliance on U.S. imports.
• Build stronger Canadian supply chains.
• Expand into new markets overseas.

If this shift occurs, Ontario businesses could see long-term benefits, with greater self-reliance, increased domestic spending, and reduced vulnerability to future trade disruptions.
